Ingredients

For the Black Bean Patties

  • 2 cans (15 oz each) Black beans, drained and rinsed
  • ½ cup Breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
  • 1 small Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp Chili powder
  • ½ tbsp Smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons water)
  • 1-2 tbsp Olive oil (for cooking)

For Burger Assembly

  • Burger buns (your choice)
  • Lettuce leave
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced red onions
  • Pickles
  • Vegan cheese slices (optional)
  • Condiments (such as vegan mayo, ketchup, or mustard)

Notes

Prepare the Black Bean Patties:

  1. In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher, leaving some texture for a nice bite.
  2. Add the finely chopped onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, ground cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper to the mashed black beans. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
  3. Prepare the flax egg by mixing 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed with 3 tablespoons of water. Let it sit for a couple of minutes until it thickens, then add it to the black bean mixture. Mix until everything is thoroughly combined.
  4. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty. Make sure they are about 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick.

Cook the Black Bean Patties:

  1. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil.
  2. Once the oil is hot, place the black bean patties in the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and heated through. If you'd like to add vegan cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking and cover the skillet to melt the cheese.

Assemble Your Black Bean Bliss Burger:

  1. Toast your choice of burger buns until they're lightly browned.
  2. Spread your preferred condiments on the bottom half of each bun.
  3. Place a lettuce leaf on top of the condiments, followed by a black bean patty (with or without vegan cheese).
  4. Add sliced tomatoes, red onions, pickles, and any additional toppings you desire.
  5. Top with the other half of the bun.
